The Winton Institute for Monetary History was established in the Ashmolean Museum in January 2010 by a donation to the Museum from Winton Capital Management. The Institute exists to promote the study of monetary and financial history. The primary focus of this research will be British, from the seventh century to the present day, but this does not preclude consideration of the Iron Age, Roman and Romano-British economies.
The Institute works closely with the University of Oxford's graduate programme in Economic and Social History, and with the Cambridge Centre for Financial History. In addition to the research conducted at the Institute, we organise seminars and conferences and are engaged in wider academic and policy discussions about monetary and financial issues.
